The oval carved glass medallion which likely depicts Julius Caesar has been mounted in a later 18 karat yellow gold frame. The medallion is signed 'Hecker' for Christian Friedrich Hecker (1754-1795) who was active in Italy from around 1770 to 1790 and was known for his execution of fine cameos and intaglios. Hecker is known to have completed his apprenticeship under Giovanni Pilcher and can count the poet Goethe as a patron. There are examples of the work of Hecker held in the British Museum and pieces offered for sale by the great London jeweller, Wartski. The profile in the ring while not positively identified as Caesar has remarkable similarities to period depictions of him and likely is showing the famous Roman general. This 1930s cigarette case was made from solid 18 karat yellow gold by Jacques Cartier of Cartier London and is literally worth its weight in gold. The case has a machined exterior and highly polished interior and closes with a cabochon sapphire set clasp. To the interior there is an articulated bar which has been pierced with an Art Deco pattern and holds the cigarettes in place. In a 21st Century context this bar could be used to keep credit cards, ID and some tissues in place should you desire to use the case as a small evening clutch. The fancy cut cabochon sapphires in the clasp total four pieces and are likely Ceylonese in origin given this is an Art Deco piece by Cartier. To the interior of one side of the case is an original Art Deco monogram which is most likely 'NWN' or a variation of the same letters. There are crisp London gold hallmarks to the inside of the case with a date letter corresponding to 1934, the height of the Art Deco period, along with a small hallmark 'JC' for Jacques Cartier. The ring is crafted from 18 karat yellow gold and features a very worn pattern to the exterior, commensurate with its age as a piece from the 18th century. The ring internally has been engraved with 'As god decreed soe wee agreed', one of the many sayings which are often engraved in these rings during the period. The ideology behind the engraving was to communicate secret messages between the giver and the wearer, worn touching the skin. These posy rings were popular in the United Kingdom from the medieval period right through to the 19th century, with them being frequently manufactured in the Georgian period and often worn as wedding bands. There is the remnant of a small hallmark to the inside which is unfortunately rubbed, however was likely indicative of the metal purity. We have had the ring XRF tested and it is 18 karat gold, and has a real buttery hue, as does much of the high karat gold jewellery of this period. Unfortunately resizing of this ring is not possible as it would result in some of the engraved script inside being lost, which is the majority of its appeal. In very good condition for its age, the ring has seen centuries of wear, but still has another lifetime of love in it. Crafted from 18 karat yellow gold and set with two diamonds, the ring was made during the Victorian period of the 19th century. The intwined double serpent ring centres on two snake heads which have each been set to their head with an old mine cut diamond that sits above recessed eyes. Each of the two diamonds is estimated to be of F/G colour and SI clarity totalling 0.20 carat, with them both being grain set into the gold. Serpent rings were extremely popular during the Victorian period with Prince Albert proposing to Queen Victoria with an emerald set snake ring, starting a trend in the jewellery world. This particular example appears to have been sized up at some stage during its life, however this has been done with great care and is not easily identified. Unfortunately the maker's mark to the inside shank we have been unable to identify, however there are clear hallmarks for London manufacture in 1885. A beautiful example of high Victorian jewellery which would make a lovely wedding band for a man who appreciates a piece with a story.

Ring size - 69/Z/12.5

Marked - London hallmarks for 18 karat and 1885 manufacture, unidentified maker's mark

Total diamond weight - 0.20 carat

Total weight of piece - 7.49 grams

Independent appraisal values the piece at $6000.

This pair of English sterling silver and agate cufflinks were made in the 1930s and have a distinct Art Deco appearance. The pair which were sourced locally in Brisbane feature pieces of grey and pink Scottish agate which have been set into sterling silver mounts made in Birmingham. The rear of the cufflinks feature hallmarks for manufacture in 1937 by Birmingham maker, J Cook and Son who operated between 1885 and 1939. The plaques of the cufflinks comprise an oval and a diamond on each and have a 'positive negative' of pink and grey Scottish agate. Whilst British sterling silver cufflinks are by no means rare, this pair are more interesting in their design than most that we come across, hence why we couldn't pass them up. Whilst they have been well worn, the pair are in very good order for their age, and are perfectly wearable for something nearly 100 years old. The stylised cufflinks which are a matched pair each feature a jockey cap and a riding crop, beautifully rendered, and reference the history of Gucci as a label. The company which was founded in 1921 have retailed equestrian related leather goods since their inception, with their horse-bit loafer a staple in the company's range. These cufflinks, which would date to the second half of the 20th century are from the period when Gucci went from being a family owned company to one of the largest luxury brands sold worldwide. It's unlikely that Gucci the firm manufactured these in house, with the likely scenario being that another jewellery company crafted the pair and Gucci have simply branded them for retail in their stores, which is fairly standard practice for large luxury companies. Crafted from 18 karat yellow gold, the ring is assayed for manufacture in Birmingham however the date mark has been stamped over with the maker's mark. The ring features the remnants of an original hand engraved dove which has become worn with time, but still presents really beautifully. To the inside of the shank are crisp hallmarks for manufacture by S Blanckensee & Son who were operating in their Birmingham workshop from 1885 onward, allowing us to date the ring to circa 1886 before 'Ltd' was incorporated into their hallmark. The exterior of the ring shows a fair amount of wear, associated with the fact it was probably worn daily by its original owner, as signet rings often are, however this has created a beautiful patina and appearance to this antique piece. The engraved dove can be interpreted in a variety of different ways, but they were often gifted as a token of love, peace, and hope for the wearer.
