The lenses that are currently fitted are likely original, and whilst in-tact do have some abrasions to the surface of the glass. The piece is marked internally for 14 karat gold and also has a makers mark in the form of a Maltese cross inside a circle, which is currently unidentified. The piece's manufacture dates to between 1908 and 1917, right at the tail end of the Romanov's reign in Russia. Well known to be the court jeweller to the Russian Imperial family, Faberge started operation in 1842 under the direction of Gustav Faberge and by the end of the 19th Century were creating one-of-a-kind masterpieces for the Tsar and his family. Upon looking at the hallmark for Horace Woodward which matches that of this cup, and discovering he mounted other coconuts in silver we can safely attribute the piece to him. Unfortunately a date mark is missing, but his company produced other wares which are date marked from 1874 to 1877, so it's likely this cup was mounted in the 1870s. In lovely condition for its age, the piece is a rare survivor of the 19th Century, and would be a great addition to a cabinet of curiosities.

Marked - 'HW' likely for Horace Woodward & Co

Measures - 13.5cm H

Total weight - 146 grams

An exquisite 19th century, French Empire style desk set in 'ormolu' or gilt bronze.

Dimensions: 31cm L x 19cm H x 17cm D

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0048/3042/9254/files/Bronze-Inkwell-1_3d4ecdaf-e1c0-4280-b284-762fe799d1c0.jpg?v=1735879535
gold-art-deco-cartier-london-cigarette-case
'Cartier London' Art Deco Cigarette Case in 18kt Gold

There is a name which jewellery enthusiasts adore hearing, and that is Cartier, especially 'Cartier London', and when you combine that with the term 'Art Deco' they might just melt down in a frenzy. This 1930s cigarette case was made from solid 18 karat yellow gold by Jacques Cartier of Cartier London and is literally worth its weight in gold. The case has a machined exterior and highly polished interior and closes with a cabochon sapphire set clasp. To the interior there is an articulated bar which has been pierced with an Art Deco pattern and holds the cigarettes in place. In a 21st Century context this bar could be used to keep credit cards, ID and some tissues in place should you desire to use the case as a small evening clutch. The fancy cut cabochon sapphires in the clasp total four pieces and are likely Ceylonese in origin given this is an Art Deco piece by Cartier. To the interior of one side of the case is an original Art Deco monogram which is most likely 'NWN' or a variation of the same letters. There are crisp London gold hallmarks to the inside of the case with a date letter corresponding to 1934, the height of the Art Deco period, along with a small hallmark 'JC' for Jacques Cartier. The case is also signed in very small cursive lettering, 'Cartier London' which further authenticates the piece as being by the famous firm.

Jacques Cartier, along with his brothers Louis and Pierre took their grandfather Louis-François Cartier's small French jewellery business and turned it into the international brand we know and love today. Pierre Cartier started a branch of the firm in New York, Jacques built the brand in London and their brother Louis remained in France where the company's roots are. The London branch of Cartier were favourite jewellers of the British Royal Family, aristocrats, and numerous celebrities especially during the 1920s and 1930s. There is a silver swag which encases the French phrase 'A Toute Heure Bonheur' which translates to 'Happiness at Any Time', perhaps a nod to the small enamelled clock housed in the clip. Aside from his main shop in London, Dreyfous also held premises in Paris and New York. There are three wonderful noted examples of works by Dreyfous in the Royal Collection, two of which are exceptionally good pieces with a similar quality of work to Faberge. One of these pieces is a enamelled and jewelled egg which was a gift to Queen Mary from her children at Christmas in 1927. To the ornate elements of the clip there were small marcasites set into the silver, however several of these have unfortunately been lost to time, leaving only a handful still mounted in the piece. The clip retains its original retailing box which has to the lid of the silk lining 'SPECIAL MAKER TO THE KING AND QUEEN OF ENGLAND' along with '582 FIFTH AVENUE PARIS AND LONDON' which could indicate this particular piece was retailed at their New York location. Our first we sourced in 2022 and it sold quickly to a collector, so we are delighted to have found a second. Crafted from pressed horn, these are usually attributed to John Obrisset (active 1705-1728) who was known for crafting cameo like portraits molded into tortoiseshell and horn. This particular example does not feature his surname or his moniker 'OB', however due to the design and the shape of the horn it is possible that the mold missed the small edge area it was to be impressed upon. The majority of these snuff boxes date to circa 1710, with another example being held in the British Museum and another having passed through Christie's.
