The figure is the work of Karl Klaus (1889-1925) and was crafted by the maker Ernst Wahliss around 1911. The figure depicts Salome, daughter of Herod II and Heordius, standing tall whilst reclining her neck, holding in her hands the severed head of John the Baptist. Richly decorated in a restrained palette of black, white, indigo blue, red and gold the figure is undeniably decorated in the Secessionist taste. Klaus was a student of Josef Hofmann and designed several figures and decorative pieces for Ernst Wahliss under the label 'Serapis Wahliss'. The figure is marked to the inside with the 'Serapis Wahliss' mark along with some registration marks and a rubbed overglaze 'signature' of some kind.

Ernst Wahliss by the end of the 19th Century was Vienna's leading porcelain and ceramics retailer. In 1894 he purchased a porcelain factory and began creating his own works under the name 'Ernst Wahliss Kunst, Porzellan und Fayence Fabrik' in Bohemia, today part of the Czech Republic. After Ernst's death his son Gerhard Martin Wahliss continued under his father's name and introduced in 1911 the 'Serapis Wahliss' range of white earthenware decorated in richly coloured enamels and motifs in keeping with the Secessionist taste of the time.

The figure is in wonderful condition for a piece of its age. The piece has no chips or cracks and remains free from 'crazing' or structural issues. There is minimal wear to the gilt finish on the figure and in general the piece is in lovely condition.

Measures - 29cm H x 9cm Diameter at the base

A blue and white cup from the Daoguong Period (1821-1850) featuring two, five claw dragons.

Measures - 10cm Diameter

A lidded porcelain jar by Fraureuth in cobalt and black with gilding in the secessionist taste, Germany, circa 1920s.

Measures - 18.5cm H

A very fine porcelain oyster plate with gilt seaweed design by English company Brownfields for retail by Tiffany & Company. Milet was known for his bold colours which were applied to a range of ceramics from vases and lamp bases to table boxes. To the foot of the vase is an applied gilt silver mount which has marks for manufacture by Parisian firm A.Risler & Carre who operated between 1897 and 1912, assisting us to date the piece to between their 15 years of their operation. In good antique condition the gilding to the silver mount has some wear and there are some slight areas of loss to the top rim of the porcelain which are commensurate with age and don't detract from the beauty of the item.

Measures - 10.5cm H

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0048/3042/9254/products/Milet-Vase-1_aa152e2c-fe9e-4e4e-a507-334834bfecb8.jpg?v=1654917662
19th-century-chinese-cobalt-glazed-vase
19th Century Chinese Cobalt Glazed Vase

A 19th century, Chinese, cobalt blue glazed sleeve vase

Dimensions: 29cm H x 13cm D

A small, 20th-century, Chinese baluster vase with a Sang De Boeuf or oxblood coloured glaze.

Dimensions: 19cm H x 9cm D

An English jasperware stilton dome with neoclassical motifs and an acorn border, attributed to Wedgwood, circa 1870. While there are no chips or cracks, some of the porcelain has suffered yellowing as evidenced in the images.

The dome has no maker's marks however it is identical to other unmarked Wedgwood items that have been identified by the Wedgwood Society as genuine Wedgwood.

Dimensions: 25cm H x 27cm D

A large and rare ceramic monochromatic putto holding grapes (Autumn from "The Four Seasons") by Austrian designer Michael Powolny for Gmundner Keramische Werkstatte. The incredibly detailed suite mimics the original Kremlin Service which was made by The Imperial Porcelain Factory for Tsar Nicholas I (1796-1855) and was destined for The Great Kremlin Palace in Moscow. The original suite was designed by Fedor Grigorievich Solntsev (1801-92) and executed in 1837 and 1838. Pieces of The Kremlin Service are held in museums and galleries around the world, with both The British Museum and The Hermitage Museum holding original examples. In the centre of each piece is the double headed eagle, a sign of Imperial Russia, with a band of text surrounding it which translates from Cyrillic to English as 'NICHOLAS EMPEROR AND AUTOCRAT OF ALL RUSSIA'. The style that the service was decorated in by Solnstev could perhaps best be referred to as Russo-Byzantine, with him also taking inspiration from the tableware used by the Tsars of the 17th century.

Reproductions of The Kremlin Service are highly sought after and usually date to the first part of the 20th century. The pattern in which the vase has been decorated in is known as 'Banana Tree' or pattern 2214, which was first introduced by Josiah Spode II in around 1814. Due to the mark for Spode on the underside we can ascertain that the vase was made prior to 1833 when their marks changed, giving us a date range for manufacture to between 1814 and 1833. Spill vases were designed to hold thin strips of wood, twisted paper and tapers on a mantel above a fireplace, in essence a tasteful way to store fire kindling. This particular spill vase presents in very good order with only some minor wear to the gilding and a couple of internal firing cracks from the time of manufacture. A really delightful piece of Georgian period porcelain which would be a beautiful addition to a bedside table filled with a posy picked from the garden.

Marked - 'SPODE' & '2214' being the pattern number, both hand written in enamel

Measures - 10.25cm H x 5.25cm W (at base)

This remarkable pair of Spode pierced chestnut baskets with their under-plates date to the Regency period and were crafted in Stoke-on-Trent. The under-plates have a pierced rim and an almost geometric brown and green hand enamelled border, which is thought to be pattern 3037, marked to the underside of the pieces. The matched baskets have the same piercing and enamelled decoration plus lovely naturalistic faux branch handles. The pair likely date to circa 1820, with pattern 2947 introduced in 1819 indicating pattern 3037 was in the couple of years that followed, and were manufactured in Spode's Stoke-on-Trent factory. We can confidently say the pair were manufactured prior to 1833 when Spode's ownership changed along with their marking process. Incredibly the pair have remained together in their 200 year life and present in good antique condition. There is minor fine crazing throughout all four of the pieces and some minor staining in areas, commensurate with age and use. To the underside of one under-plate there is a small glaze chip, and one of the under-plates appears to have had a section repainted, evidenced in a slight difference in colour along with it showing up under a UV light (see image five). All in all, a really beautiful example of Regency period Spode which have remained a pair for over 200 years!

Marked - 'SPODE' and '3037'

Measures - 25cm D (plates) and 8cm H (when on the plates)

This charming and rather large tankard was made in England in the early 19th century. The transfer printed designs feature a classical figure on a chariot being drawn by horses on both sides of the vase and an ornate border to the top and each of the two handles. The transfer panels have been hand finished to give the illusion they have been completely hand painted. There are substantial areas of gilding to the vase which further allow the tangerine ground of the piece to pop. The piece is completely unsigned, however similar designs and examples have been firmly attributed to Samuel Alcock & Co who were operating between 1828 and 1859, and therefore we believe the piece to be one of the firm's designs. The vase presents in very good antique condition with no chips or cracks, however has wear to the gilding commensurate with age and use.
