One shoulder of the ring is set with 11 brilliant cut diamonds that have been pave set and are each of F\/G colour and VS clarity totalling 0.40 carat. The other shoulder is channel set with six baguette cut and one triangle step cut ruby which can be described as fine purplish red, bright and eye clean. The ring is fully hallmarked internally for Van Cleef \u0026amp; Arpels and has two French hallmarks on the outside of the shank, one for the gold purity and the other unfortunately has rubbed and is illegible. In lovely condition this ring unfortunately cannot be resized without losing some of the hallmarks, so we would not recommend any changes in size. The ring mount is crafted from 18 karat yellow and rose gold and has been rub over set with a hard stone cameo which is likely 18th or 19th century in origin. The cameo depicts a classical man in profile, likely a Roman, facing left, however we have been unable to identify the sitter. Classical cameos and intaglios in profile like this often depict Roman emperors like Julius Caesar or Hadrian, however it can be hard to attribute profiles to a particular person. It is possible that this particular ring started life as a small brooch pin and has been converted to a ring later, however this does not detract from the piece as it has been beautifully crafted regardless. It should be noted that there is some crazing to the hard stone, mainly visible from the back, which is most likely natural inclusions as opposed to later damage. There are some very minor losses to the white profile sections of the cameo, commensurate with age and use. The ring's central diamond has been eight claw set and features a four claw set modern brilliant cut diamond on each shoulder graded as H\/I colour and VS-SI clarity totalling 0.13 carat together. Whilst the ring is of contemporary manufacture it is most likely that the central diamond has been repurposed from an older piece of jewellery from the early part of the 20th century. The posy type cluster of diamonds are set within 14 karat yellow gold and silver. This 'button' was delicately altered to become a ring during the 19th century with the addition of a yellow gold shank which has been silver topped and set with small rose cut diamonds. The original button element centres on a single round rose cut diamond which is foil backed and estimated to be of K colour and SI2 clarity totalling 0.60 carat. This central diamond is surrounded by 10 'petals' in the form of foil backed oval shaped rose cut diamonds that are classed as 'light grey' and are P3 in clarity totalling an estimated 1.00 carat. The outer edge of the petals have been further set with small rose cut diamonds which flow down the split leaf shoulders and total 90 pieces and approximately 0.20 carat. The button element of the ring would have likely belonged to a aristocrat or wealthy member of society and perhaps once adored with its identical siblings a fine waistcoat. Generally buttons of this nature adorned the garments of gentleman rather than ladies, and would have been detachable to allow the clothing to be laundered. When buttons such as these fell out of style they were often fashioned into rings with similar examples seen in galleries and fine estate jewellers globally. The former owner of this particular ring purchased it from the esteemed North American firm, Park Avenue Antiques, and the piece retains its original retailing box from the time of purchase. Due to the piece having foil back stones, it is recommended to not let the ring be submerged in water, including washing hands, and as such it really is a cocktail piece which should be reserved for special occasions.
