An extremely fine and rare shaving 'sponge box' in silver from the early 19th Century. The footed spherical box originates in Cordoba in Spain and was crafted by Diego de la Vega. The box is signed to the underside 'VEGA 18' along with the rampant lion, which is the mark for Cordoba in Spain. The lid of the spherical box is pierced and engraved and features a small bird knop to the centre top. 'Sponge boxes' and their associated 'soap boxes' were crafted for the use of travellers, typically from France, during the 18th and 19th century.
