A scarce American silver hinged card case depicting the Capitol Building in Washington, circa 1850. The case depicts a rarely seen image of the old 'Bulfinch' dome, which was designed in 1812 by Charles Bulfinch and later remodelled and enlarged in 1856 to what we see today. Whilst unmarked the piece can be attributed to Leonard and Wilson of Philadelphia who made several signed examples of these cases. To the reverse side of the case there is a blank cartouche for a monogram or name to be inscribed. In lovely condition for a piece 170 years of age, the cartouche to the rear is missing a small tip as seen in the images, and the case has been slightly pinched to the centre of one side. Both flaws are commensurate with age and don't detract from the appearance of this rare item.
