This exceptional Regency period mahogany sofa is beautiful in its simplicity. Crafted in England during the reign of George IV (1762-1830) the sofa is handsome and strong in appearance with minimal adornment or 'fuss'. To the rear there are four sleek sabre legs and to the front there are four streamline Marlborough legs which are all void of ornament. The sofa in recent years has been reupholstered in a rich Fortuny fabric called 'Orsini' with careful placement of the pattern taken into consideration. The fabric comprises of fuchsia and metallic silver treated cotton that has been presented in a rich and typically Venetian pattern. The sofa has some typical signs of wear expected with a piece of furniture nearing 200 years of age such as signs of borer activity at some stage through its lifetime. We consider the signs of wear and use with this piece to be all commensurate with age.

The house of Fortuny dates back to the early 20th Century when Mariano Fortuny started his iconic clothing and textile label. Handmade to date in Venice the textile company is regarded as one of the finest makers in the world, with their fabrics commanding an exceptionally high price per meter. Fortuny was genius in his new methods to treat 'cotton' which gave the very plain material an exclusive and highly sought after appeal.
