The 'Barcelona' chair was originally designed by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe and his collaborator Lilly Reich in the late 1920s, debuting at the International Exposition of 1929, hosted in Barcelona, Spain.

Although the Bauhaus era of design was characterized by the pursuit of an attainable and utilitarian aesthetic; design for the common man, the Barcelona chairs were an exception to the rule. With the form said to be an extrapolation of the Roman 'Curule Chairs', an upholstered stool used by the Roman aristocracy, the Barcelona chair was designed to be used by Spanish royalty to oversee the opening ceremonies of the exhibition. Furthermore, Knoll who took on manufacturing the design in 1953 has stated that despite its industrial appearance the Barcelona chair requires much hand craftsmanship.

In the 1950s, the Barcelona chair was slightly redesigned using stainless steel, which allowed the frame to be formed from one piece of metal giving it a smoother appearance.

This particular pair featuring stainless steel and brown leather are a high quality copy from the 1970s and are faithful to the design classic.

Dimensions: 70cm H x 90cm D x 75cm
