Farmer was a prominent American art dealer, antique trader and creator of luxury objects. He operated his own business 'Edward I. Farmer Inc.' for 29 years before his death in 1942. German in origin, Farmer travelled widely in his youth and collected antiquities especially those of oriental origin, which were often later crafted into prized objects at his studio in New York. He worked out of the Carlyle Hotel at one point and has been described as an 'art and antique dealer and collector of Chinese jades and porcelains'. Farmer would regularly turn elaborate and carved semi precious stones into works of art by making them into boxes, inkwells, push buttons and other desk accessories. Farmer mostly worked with sterling silver, however there are examples in 18 karat gold which are exceedingly rare. To the side of the coffee pot there is a blank cartouche which remains free of a heraldic crest or a monogram which is a rarity for a piece of this age. The pot features hallmarks for manufacture in London in 1748 under the reign of George II, however the makers mark which is located on the underside of the pot is slightly rubbed and remains unidentified. The piece is in extraordinarily good condition for an item made 275 years ago and is still as usable today as it was in 1748. A beautiful addition to the breakfast table with freshly decanted coffee, or a potentially prized item for an English silver collector.

Marked - hallmarks for London 1748 and unidentified makers mark

Measures - 24.5cm H x 21cm W

Total weight of piece - 844.5 grams

This three piece sterling silver coffee set was designed by Sigvard Bernadotte and manufactured by Georg Jensen. Sigvard Bernadotte was the son of Gustav VI of Sweden, and later aunt to Queen Margarethe of Denmark. When he married a woman 'of unequal rank' in 1934 he lost his titles and became simply known as 'Mr Bernadotte'. Known for his design skills he worked designing for Georg Jensen for many years but also designed eyewear and even a typewriter. To the bowenite are some natural fissures to one area which are stable and likely have been present since manufacture. The original glass liner remains in good condition with no chips or cracks. To the underside, it appears there have been some restorations at some stage to the four-winged paw feet, as whilst all are still in place, a couple appear to be re-soldered at some point in the object's life. The piece has a date mark indicating it was manufactured in London in 1804. The piece has a period monogram to the handle which reads 'JEM', likely the initials of the original owner. The piece is in good antique condition however has a slight warp/bend to the central part of the handle. It should be noted that in the image of the hallmarks that the maker's mark is not visible, however when viewing it in person it is more readily visible. The piece has crisp hallmarks for manufacture in 1760 which is the year George II died, and George III succeeded. The silversmith John Barbe was noted to have produced silver in London from 1741-1769. The piece has no monograms or engravings which is somewhat unusual for a piece from the Georgian era. The piece has been forged from 800 purity silver (Italian standard) in Milan, likely in the late 1960s. The piece is hallmarked for manufacture by 'Eugenio e Angelo Orefice' who were operating their workshop between 1955 and 1971. The silver hallmark for Milano which is present on this piece was only introduced in 1968, and the partnership of Eugenio & Angelo Orefice finished in 1971, allowing us to comfortably date the manufacture of this piece to between 1968 and 1971. The central section of the fountain depicts a seated figure of Neptune which towers above more depictions of Neptune, seashells, reeds, seahorses, crabs and octopuses. The piece has been recently polished and overhauled by our silversmith, however we have not had the pump wired or tested for use and the piece will require this to be done by its new custodians in order for the fountain to function. There have been several other examples of table fountains by Eugenio & Angelo Orefice which have passed through the hands of antique dealers and fine auction houses, however it is very likely that this example is the only fountain of its kind in Australia, and is most likely to be a unique piece. The body of the deep brown coconut has been incised with a tribal geometric pattern before it was mounted in silver in the United Kingdom. Interestingly there is only one hallmark to the entire body of the piece, that of a 'HW', which is most likely for Victorian maker Horace Woodward & Co who operated between 1874 and 1877. Upon looking at the hallmark for Horace Woodward which matches that of this cup, and discovering he mounted other coconuts in silver we can safely attribute the piece to him. Unfortunately a date mark is missing, but his company produced other wares which are date marked from 1874 to 1877, so it's likely this cup was mounted in the 1870s. The engine turned tumbler features a beautifully engraved crest to the centre front of the cup and is likely for the family who it originally belonged to, however is unidentified. To the underside the cup is marked 'V 13', which is a Loth standard mark, indicating it is manufactured from 812 purity silver (812 of 1000 parts pure) in Continental Europe, most probably in the German/Austrian region. The collapsable cup features the remnants of a gilt wash interior which would have been done to prevent tarnishing on the inside.
