A vintage Girard Perregaux Gyromatic "High Frequency" automatic with the day-date feature, circa 1970s.
This watch is equipped with the High-Frequency Gyromatic automatic movement, a Girard-Perregaux patent from 1965. It enabled the construction of very fast-swinging flat automatic movements with 36,000 vibrations per hour. This results in extreme accuracy, which made it possible to win observatory competitions with series watches, while competitors had to prepare their watches for weeks to be able to participate. For many experts, this high frequency is seen as the last useful improvement in mechanical watch movement in terms of precision.
