This very rare 18 karat yellow gold chatelaine chain was crafted in the then Austro Hungarian empire in the middle of the 19th Century. The piece is crafted from solid 18 karat yellow gold and is hallmarked for Bratislava with its date range being between 1867 and 1872. The purpose of a chatelaine was to hang from a lady's waist and hold keys along with important things required by women of the period, such as scissors, a vinaigrette, spectacles or even a thimble case. The purpose was so that the lady of the house had total control over the many pieces which required locking such as desks, tea and sugar caddies, liquor cabinets and silverware cupboards. In the absence of a lady of the house often a housemaid would wear a chatelaine. Typically a chatelaine was an ornate object and typically crafted from a less expensive material such as silver or rolled gold, however this unusual and rare piece is crafted from solid 18 karat gold. This is a rare example from a very narrow period in history and is exceedingly unusual in that is is crafted from solid 18 karat gold.
