An exceptional horse head brooch pendant made by Pierino Frascarolo (1928-1976) who was an Italian jeweller producing incredible work in the mid 20th century. The 18 karat yellow gold brooch is heavily textured and has been manufactured in two separate parts - the mane attached with screws to the body of the horse. The eye of the pin is set with a single round cut 0.05 carat 'moderately bright mid pinkish red lightly included' ruby. To the bottom the pin has been set with a line of single and brilliant cut diamonds of G/H colour and VS-SI clarity totalling 0.15 carat. To the rear the piece is finished with a hinged pin and roller catch fitting, along with a single bale loop to the top of the head which with the addition of a round bale would allow the piece to be worn as a pendant. Frascarolo during his relatively short life produced high jewellery during the mid 20th century in both Italy and the United States, often zoomorphic and bold in appearance. This brooch pendant is an exceptional example of his work and we estimate the piece to date to circa 1960.
