A fine quality George III 'breakfront' buffet sideboard in mahogany. The English buffet from the late 18th century has been executed in a rich nutmeg mahogany with blond wood stringing. Each side of the piece features a curved cupboard which flank a bank of two central drawers, one of which is concealed. The piece is supported by six tapering square section legs and the drawers are finished with brass round bail drawer pulls in the NeoClassical taste. Unusually this sideboard retains two original keys which fit the original working locks.
The design of the 'sideboard' is generally attributed to Robert Adams whose designs first appeared after 1760. Robert Adams and his brother were dedicated to the classical designs of Roman and Greek history and this is often heavily reflected in their work, and therefore pieces like this that were inspired by Adam's design.
