This Grand Tour souvenir dates to the late 19th Century and features micro mosaic depictions of Roman historical sites. The piece which would have been purchased in Italy on someone's 'Grand Tour' has been embellished with fine micro mosaic depictions, many of which are easily recognisable. The cross depicts the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls, Archbasilica of St John Lateran, St Peter's Square, the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, The Colosseum and the Pantheon. Whilst the workmanship in the cross is not the 'finest' example of micro mosaic, it is certainly in exceptionally good condition and is a beautiful example of the technique given the size of the cross. The piece has a Byzantine aesthetic in terms of its form and is beautifully aged with the gilt bronze showing appropriate signs of wear. The cross has an articulated bale to the top which allows it to be hung from a wall with the assistance of a decorative hook. A beautiful object for someone who is a devout Catholic, or a great addition to a collection of Grand Tour souvenirs.
