Crafted from silver and a piece of rock crystal, this desk seal was made by the Parisian maker Maria Remy. Operating from 13 Rue Thévenot in Paris between 1894 and 1924, it's likely this seal was manufactured in the first quarter of the 20th Century. The handle of the seal is a piece of polished tapering rock crystal which is capped in silver at the top and terminates with the silver 'seal' or 'matrix' at the bottom. Applied to the outside of the rock crystal is a silver flaming torch, laurel branches and ribbons which are attached with small pins. The oval matrix of the piece is engraved with the initials 'JB' or possibly 'JM' depending on how the script is read. The piece is double struck with the hallmark for Maria Remy, however is unmarked for the silver purity, likely to be 950/1000 parts pure silver. A really gorgeous piece of objet d'art and a lovely accessory to have placed on a fine desk.
