This rare and exceedingly beautiful snuff-box dates to the second half of the 18th Century and was likely made in England. The oval box is crafted from 18 karat yellow and rose gold and has been set with two pieces of petrified wood agate. The lid of the box is a cabochon of petrified wood agate that resembles a 'rose' or flower in the way the stone has formed. The gold mounts of the box are crafted from 18 karat yellow and rose gold and have wonderful engine turned detailing and leaf motif borders. The hinge of the box is beautifully crafted and the box still closes extremely well. It's noted in literature on snuff boxes that English gold snuff boxes from the second half of the 18th Century were rarely hallmarked, which leads us to believe this piece is of English origin as opposed to French or German. Undoubtedly the most beautiful and rare snuff box we have had in our collection to date, this piece is truly of museum quality.
