A scarce pair of mid 20th century, Chinese huanghuali hardwood chairs with a rich patina. The curved splat is topped with a scholar's hat crest leading down to stretchered legs featuring curved aprons to the front and sides.
The Chinese term huanghuali literally means "yellow flowering pear" wood. It is a member of the rosewood family and is botanically classified as Dalbergia odorifera.
The finest huanghuali has a translucent shimmering surface with abstractly figured patterns that delight the eye--those appearing like ghost faces were highly prized. The color can range from reddish-brown to the golden-yellow present in this fine example.
