A really beautiful Swedish sterling silver lockable box or sugar chest from the early 20th Century. The handcrafted box was made in Stockholm in 1916 by 'Axel Gabriel Dufva' (1822-1897) who by this stage had passed away and his company was being run by his sons Harald Gabriel & John Helmer. The ribbed, lidded box sits atop of four scroll feet and features a floral finial to the lid along with what appears to be its original key. The key turns but unfortunately does not activate the lock, however a traditional locksmith could potentially rectify this if it were desired. The piece has crisp Swedish hallmarks to the underside of the base which help identify the maker and period it was made in with ease. Originally this box would have been crafted as a lockable sugar chest, however could be used now as a beautiful jewel box or vessel to hold a small collection of precious objects.

Axel Gabriel Dufva was born into a family of Swedish goldsmiths in 1822. After completing his silversmithing apprenticeship he founded the first silver plating factory in Stockholm which was also the first in Sweden. His two sons continued their father's business under his name until 1936 when it was absorbed into a larger metalworking company.
