A wonderful Etruscan Revival brooch, finely crafted from 18k gold with seed pearls and turquoise, circa 1870. Each gold sphere was made by heating a batch of gold clippings until surface tension forced each into a ball shape. The gold spheres were then sifted and sorted into different sizes and then hand-assembled with a tiny paintbrush on the surface of the brooch. Once assembly was complete the piece was ‘bloomed’ being left in a nearly forgotten recipe of acidic agents that would eat away the alloy from the surface of the gold leaving a layer of pure, buttery yellow gold. The reverse features a locket for hair or a small photograph.
