A very lovely pair of Victorian Whitby jet earrings in the form of a pair of oversized anchors. Jet has been used in jewellery since the Neolithic period, but the earliest object is a 10,000 BC 'botfly' larva from Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.
During the Iron Age jet went out of fashion but regained popularity with a massive resurgence during the Victorian Era. This pair is a gorgeous example of jet at its finest and at the height of its popularity. The earrings have some inventive and well executed repairs to the back, which add character and patina.
