Authentication, Documentation & Provenance

How do you authenticate antique pieces?

We authenticate pieces by assessing hallmarks, maker signatures, materials, and construction methods. Thorough examination of each item is required to determine who made it, when it was made, how it was made, where it was made and within what context. Sometimes it isn't possible to answer all these questions. 

Not every item we stock can be identified as fully as others however we pride ourselves on giving as much accurate information as we can at the time.  We rely on our team’s developing expertise, alongside external specialists when needed, to ensure each item’s authenticity is thoroughly verified. The research we do with each of our stock offerings is an evolving process that sometimes takes a great deal of time. The discoveries leading to our understanding of an item’s history evolve over time and sometimes lead to the value of an item changing.  Whenever new information comes to light about an item, we update our files and any published info about our stock as soon as possible.

Do items come with provenance or documentation?

Where available, we provide detailed provenance and documentation to verify each item’s history and authenticity. For many of our pieces, we offer comprehensive records that trace their origin and journey and in some cases, past owners don't want their identity known and that is something we have to respect when requested. Provenance is an important part of verifying the genuine nature of many antiques but we don't make this information the only criteria for stocking it in our shop. While we would love every time to have its entire history traced and available, it often isnt possible and we have to rely on our examination of it to verify its authenticity.

Are signed and notable pieces independently verified?

In many cases, signed and notable pieces are independently evaluated by external experts to ensure their authenticity and provenance. There are cases where it is not required as published resources and our own proprietary knowledge are enough to verify the authenticity of a piece by a known maker. In either case, we guarantee that an item in our store is sold as described and if it proves not to be as such, we offer a refund on that item. We stand by our verification guarantees and that the rare and valuable item we stock meet our high standards.

Purchasing & Returns

What is the return policy for antique objects?

We handle returns on a case-by-case basis, considering the unique nature of each piece. We recommend reaching out with any concerns prior to purchasing so we can ensure the item meets your expectations. As per consumer law, if an item is not as described or fit for purpose it can be returned. If our customers simply change their mind about an item, we reserve the right not to return an item but instead will offer an exchange at our discretion. Some of our items stocked are not our property and are being sold on consignment for private individuals and as such, we cannot exchange or return them unless they are not as described or fit for purpose.

Can I reserve or place an item on hold?

Yes, we offer the option to place an item on hold for a limited time. Please contact us to discuss the terms and conditions of holding a piece.

Do you offer layby, payment plans or financing options?

We offer flexible payment plans for select items. If you're interested in these options, feel free to inquire, and we’ll work with you to find a suitable arrangement.

Shipping, Insurance & Delivery

Do you ship within Australia and internationally?

Yes, we ship both domestically and internationally. All items are carefully packed, and we work with trusted carriers to ensure safe delivery to your location. Before shipping, a comprehensive quote will be arranged for third party shipping to your desired address.

Is shipping insured for high-value antiques?

Yes, we insure all high-value antiques during transit to provide peace of mind at your discretion. Shipping insurance is quoted based on the declared value of the item being shipped and our clients can choose insurance at their discretion. Shipments are not automatically insured under our own policies.

What are handling times and packaging standards?

Our handling times are typically 3-5 business days, depending on the item’s size and complexity and this generally starts after a quote has been approved.. All items are packaged with the utmost care, using high-quality materials to ensure they arrive safely and securely.

Can you help source a specific maker or item?

Absolutely! If you’re searching for a particular maker or item, we can help source it for you. We have a wide network of dealers, auctions, and collectors, and we’ll keep an eye out for items that match your request.

Can I request research details on a particular piece?

Yes, we can provide additional research or historical context for any piece you’re interested in. Simply contact us with your request, and we’ll share everything we have on the piece, including provenance, maker details, and any other relevant information.
