Description

This striking and unusual ring was made in the first quarter of the 20th century by French jeweller, Victor Gérard. The 18 karat yellow gold ring is crafted in the Egyptian revival taste which was a popular theme in French jewellery design during the early 20th century, following the rediscovery of Egyptian tombs. The asymmetric papyrus reed motif of the ring contains a single marquise cabochon ruby which has been cap set to the top and the bottom. The ruby has an estimated weight of 0.80 carat and is pinkish red in colour with light inclusions. The ring has a poinçon for French maker Victor Gérard who was active in Paris during the first part of the 20th century. Pieces by Gérard are known for their strong Art Nouveau motifs often incorporating enamel and bold colours. This ring is in very lovely condition for its age and shows little signs of wear, however we would not recommend resizing it in order to retain its hallmarks and not disturb the pattern in the shank. A gorgeous piece of Egyptian revival jewellery from a noted maker.
