Description

Did you love Joan in Mad Men? Remember in the office she always wore a gold pencil on a chain? Here's your chance to channel your inner Joanie. This 18 karat yellow gold retractable propelling pencil was manufactured in England by S Mordan & Co, a company founded in 1823 by Sampson Mordan, who with his partner were credited with being the inventors of the propelling pencil. This particular example which is weighty and rather luxurious was manufactured likely around the turn of the century in London from 18 karat gold. Unfortunately the date marks which would have originally been present on the piece have rubbed over time which leaves its exact date of manufacture unknown. The rubbing of these date marks is entirely in keeping with a piece which was handled often, quite literally leading to them being rubbed. When we acquired this piece we took it to the long standing Queensland institution, The Pen Shoppe, who serviced the mechanism, refilled it with lead, and have kindly provided us with written instructions as to how to wind it, and refill the reservoir. S Mordan & Company were in existence until World War II when their factory was destroyed by bombs during the London Blitz and were known to make some of the finest propelling pencils in the world, with this example being a testament to their craftsmanship. Channel your inner Mad Men Joan and attach this to a fine chain, we can guarantee you won't find anyone else rocking this look in the office!
