Description

This recently reupholstered French settee dates to the 18th Century during the reign of Louis XVI. The carved walnut piece sits on four graceful, tapered and grooved legs which attach to its upholstered arm-wrests which are accented with acanthus leaves. The backrest of the piece features a central wreath of flowers and ribbon motifs to each side.

Louis XVI was the last King of France prior to the French revolution in 1792. Known for his extravagant lifestyle, Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antionette were tastemakers in not only France but the whole of Europe and the furniture, decorative arts and jewellery produced in France during their reign reflects their exquisite taste and aesthetic.
