This really delightful yellow gold and black enamel band was made to be a mourning ring on the death of someone's grandfather. The 5 millimeter wide band has black enamel to the exterior and has large cut away letters which spell 'MEMORIE' along with a geometric motif separating the start and end of 'MEMORIE'. Inside the band is engraved 'Grandfather' and '1908' along with a crisp set of hallmarks for manufacture in Chester, England in 1901. There is a maker's mark 'WGM' which to date we have been unable to attribute to a specific jeweller. There is some minor wear to the enamelling on the exterior which is expected for a piece of this age, however in our opinion the ring presents in very good antique condition. A really beautiful piece of mourning jewellery from the Edwardian period which would be a beautiful addition to a stack of gold bands.
