For many years, rose chairs were thought to have been exclusively used by women due to their floral name. However, they were a universal form of seating, often used for writing due to their low back and small frame.
The construction of these chairs was accomplished with the traditional mortise and tenon joinery technique to continuously join the top rail, sides, and legs with stretchers in between resulting in a square and rather moderne form. The open back splat features subtle carved details of classic Chinese scrolls.
Zitan, a member of the rosewood family, is extremely rare with few pieces known to be greater than a foot in width due to its density and slow growth.
