Description

A large antique majolica jardiniere with catchment plate by Minton. The spiral fluted body with turquoise ground is decorated with a blue and yellow egg and dart rim and a foliage themed base. A pair of ram's head figures have been applied as decorative handles. An altered form of this design, with garlands of flowers and fruits between the ram's heads, was modelled by Baron Carlo Marochetti and shown at the Great Exhibition in 1851. Marks for Minton from 1875.

Condition: 
Catchment plate - Chip to underside of rim, some flaking of clear glaze on underside, scratching commensurate with age and use.
Jardiniere - Minor losses to glaze at various points, crazing throughout, large crack branching in three directions to one side of body, firing chip/fault to the other side of body, many small chips to bottom rim, small loss to one ram's head, some scuffs and discolouration commensurate with age and use.
