An early 20th-century Japanese carving depicting one of the two 'Nio' figures (The Two Kings), guardians of the Buddhist temple. This particular Nio figure depicts Kongō Rikishi. He symbolizes latent strength, holding his mouth tightly shut, sometimes barehanded as in this example, and sometimes wielding a sword. Previously gilt and painted.
