Description

An ornamental secretaire or writing desk in the Napoleon III style, crafted from ebonized timber, and boulle, with brass and mother of pearl inlay. The piece features extensive brass mounts including a gallery to the top. Boulle work, created by the famed French cabinetmaker Andre Charles Boulle, is the inlay of tortoiseshell, brass, and pewter into ebony, made famous by Boulle in the early 18th century.

An applied plaque to the reverse provides some provenance to the L.E. Coolidge Carriage Factory from Woodridge, Massachusetts which was operational from the 1890s to the early 20th century. This piece is most likely an American example of boulle work.

Dimensions: 131cm H x 74cm W x 53cm D

Condition: Evidence of previous restoration, with lacquering over missing brass in the boulle. Does not come with a key to match the lock. Overall good condition with minor wear and patina commensurate with age and use.
