Description

This very fine quality Japanese 'enamelled' bronze writing box is known as a 'Suzuri-bako' and dates to the 19th Century. The side panels of the box show enamelled figural scenes in a palace garden. There are 3 'window' style lids/doors which open to reveal two large ink stones, a silver water dropper and a brush washing vessel. The lids of the three compartments are crafted from brass and depict silver dragons and a silver phoenix in relief. From the construction and quality of this suzuri-bako we believe it to date to the mid 19th Century, toward the end of the Edo Period (1603-1867). Extremely heavy in its construction, the piece is beautifully made and only has some minor losses to the enamel which are commensurate with age.

Measures - 20.5cm W x 21cm D x 6cm H
