Description

It is no secret that the best Art Deco furniture comes from France, and this particular example by Dominique is a stellar example. The sideboard is crafted from rosewood and to each end there are a bank of five drawers which have Deco style brass drawer pulls. The centre of the cabinet has five open nooks which are bordered in shagreen inlay and would be perfect to display books and decorative objects. The stepped top of the cabinet has a decorative brass border which is distinctly Art Deco in its geometric design. To the rear is a maker's stamp for 'Dominique Paris' which was founded in France's capital in 1922. The firm which was started by André Domin (1883–1962) and Marcel Genèvrière (1885–1967) operated from rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris and were often known to collaborate with Jean Puiforcat to manufacture the furniture's hardware. There is an additional label to the rear of the piece for B Altman and Co of New York who were a luxury department store operating from the mid 19th century. This label indicates that Dominique manufactured the sideboard for retail in New York rather than retail in France. The sideboard is in good overall condition having been freshly cleaned and overhauled by our in house furniture restorer. It should be noted that the back right leg has been broken at some stage, however was professionally repaired and has had a metal bracket integrated into the repair to further strengthen the area. The piece which dates to circa 1940 would make a terrific entrance-hall cabinet or could be purposed to have a TV sit atop of it in a modern day apartment.
