This exceedingly rare jewel has been converted to be a ring from what was an 18th century Georgian diamond button. The posy type cluster of diamonds are set within 14 karat yellow gold and silver. This 'button' was delicately altered to become a ring during the 19th century with the addition of a yellow gold shank which has been silver topped and set with small rose cut diamonds. The original button element centres on a single round rose cut diamond which is foil backed and estimated to be of K colour and SI2 clarity totalling 0.60 carat. This central diamond is surrounded by 10 'petals' in the form of foil backed oval shaped rose cut diamonds that are classed as 'light grey' and are P3 in clarity totalling an estimated 1.00 carat. The outer edge of the petals have been further set with small rose cut diamonds which flow down the split leaf shoulders and total 90 pieces and approximately 0.20 carat. The button element of the ring would have likely belonged to a aristocrat or wealthy member of society and perhaps once adored with its identical siblings a fine waistcoat. Generally buttons of this nature adorned the garments of gentleman rather than ladies, and would have been detachable to allow the clothing to be laundered. When buttons such as these fell out of style they were often fashioned into rings with similar examples seen in galleries and fine estate jewellers globally. The former owner of this particular ring purchased it from the esteemed North American firm, Park Avenue Antiques, and the piece retains its original retailing box from the time of purchase. Due to the piece having foil back stones, it is recommended to not let the ring be submerged in water, including washing hands, and as such it really is a cocktail piece which should be reserved for special occasions. A rare and superb survivor from the Georgian period, ready for a new 21st century life.
