This rather grand demilune buffet is crafted from mahogany and burl wood and was designed by Josef Hoffmann for Austrian makers J & J Kohn. The piece was crafted in circa 1905 and was made in Austria for retail in Paris. The bottom section of the buffet features a demilune shaped cabinet which has a marble topped work surface. To the top the buffet features a three door glass fronted cabinet with the original pressed glass panels. To the inside of one of the top cupboards is a retailing plaque marked 'JJ Kohn 109 Rue Du Faubourg Saint Antoine Paris', indicating it was manufactured for retail in Paris.
This particular buffet previously passed through Sotheby's Monaco 'Arts Décoratifs du XXe Siècle' sale on October 19th 1986, lot 266. FR 22200. The piece also retains a sticker to the inside for Sotheby's New York which indicates it has previously passed through the New York firm. It is an excellent example of the work by arguably one of the 20th Century's greatest designers.
