This unusual ring houses what is often referred to as a 'Tassie Glass' intaglio. The aubergine glass intaglio which depicts a nymph with a tambourine likely dates to the late 18th century and has been set in a much later 9 karat yellow gold mount. This particular intaglio appears to be signed in reverse 'WHITLEY', likely for the name of the craftsman or woman who carved the dancing nymph. It is possible the figure is a depiction of Bacchante who was an ancient Greek follower of Bacchus, shown in a state of ecstasy under the influence of wine, nature and music. Tassie Glass refers to a style of carved glass intaglios, usually copies of pieces from antiquity, which were famously produced by James Tassie in the second half of the 18th century. Whilst this particular piece is not by James Tassie himself, it is likely inspired by his work during the same period. The intaglio has been mounted in a much later 9 karat yellow gold mount which has been handmade. The gold mount shows signs of age and wear associated with being such a large ring, however presents the intaglio beautifully. The glass intaglio is intact and has some tiny fleabite chips and wear to the surface commensurate with age and use. A truly unique ring which due to its bold size and history is undoubtedly going to be a conversation piece for its new custodian.
