‘The Red Boy’ or as it was originally known ‘Master Lambton’ is a famed work by Sir Thomas Lawrence and depicts a young Charles William Lambton, who was to be the future Earl of Durham. The original picture was painted in 1825 just six years before the premature death of young Master Lambton from tuberculosis. The original picture cost 600 guineas to commission which is the rough equivalent of £46,000 in current-day value and was initially displayed at the Royal Academy when first completed. In July 2021 the National Gallery in London purchased the original painting for £9.3 million from a private collection to add to their own vast collection, poignant given Sir Thomas Lawrence was one of the first Trustees of the National Gallery. The picture offered here is an oil on canvas copy of ‘The Red Boy’ in our collection and was probably painted by someone studying the work of Lawrence in the early 20th century. The frame is marked for a maker in Long Island New York, however, the picture inside was likely completed in England. In lovely antique condition with the typical cracking to the surface of the oil paint.
