Description
We get asked regularly for silver hip flasks and this particular example is a welcome addition to our current collection. Crafted from sterling silver and cut glass the piece is hallmarked for Birmingham manufacture in 1905, the middle of the Edwardian era. The maker's mark tells us the piece was manufactured by the well regarded jewellers and silversmiths Mappin & Webb, who are still in operation today. The cut glass flask has a sterling silver cup which slides over the base beautifully and has the remnants of a gilt wash to the interior to prevent tarnishing. The cap of the flask has been planished in sterling silver and features a hand engraved fern design to the top of the screw cap which is lined with cork. Both the lid and the cup are hallmarked, and whilst rubbed are undeniably for Mappin & Webb manufacture in Birmingham in 1905. The piece presents in very good order with no chips on the glass and only standard wear to the silver commensurate with age and use. A gorgeous gift for a man who loves a tipple, or a nice addition to a drinks trolley.
