This tremendous 18th Century miniature portrait is housed in an elaborate 19th Century vulcanite/ebonite frame. The oval portrait on ivory depicts a fine lady who is holding a miniature in her right hand, likely dating to the early 18th Century. The picture appears to be Austrian or French in origin however its frame is likely a later addition, probably from the second half of the 19th Century. The miniature is signed 'L David' however we have been unable to identify the painters origin despite its style being in the Austrian French taste. The rear of the picture retains its painted steel backing and a bale to allow it to be hung on a wall. A sensational miniature cased in a sensational vulcanite frame, the pair are a match made in heaven.
