Description

This rather beautiful Chinese made snuff bottle has been made in the Qianlong style but likely dates to the early 20th century. The timber snuff bottle has been entirely clad in small hand cut pieces of mother of pearl which have been beautifully engraved and wrap the piece in a mosaic like effect. To each side of the bottle is a figure in relief, one made entirely of carved mother of pearl, the other a combination of red jasper and mother of pearl. To the underside the snuff bottle has Chinese characters which translate to 'made in the Qianlong period', however it is likely this is a false mark that was added to give the illusion that the piece was older than it is. The bottle retains its original stopper with its scoop, which whilst slightly bent, is intact. Overall presents in very good antique condition with only one area of note being a small missing mother of pearl panel near the footing, commensurate with age. A gorgeous example of craftsmanship with mother of pearl which would make a lovely addition to any snuff bottle collection.

Marked - in Chinese characters to underside 'made in the Qianlong period'

Measures - 7.5cm H
