A pair of Napoleon III ewers in gilt bronze, richly decorated in a relief of stylised foliage, circa 1870. Friezes of palmettes, vine branches, and grapes frame a band of chased putti realising the quadrivium (the set of four mathematical sciences in the ancient theory: arithmetic, geometry, music, astronomy). The handle is decorated with a cherub holding a chalice and more foliage, and is connected to the body with a Satyr face. Each ewer rests on a round foot, decorated with flutes and grape vines.
