This pair of Grand Tour era ewers are in the 'oinochoe' shape and date to circa 1870. The pair are miniature in size and comprise of ormolu (gilt bronze), malachite, onyx and hardstone. The pair are ornamental and not intended for use, being just 14 centimetres in height, and would have been a souvenir from Italy during someone's Grand Tour during the second half of the 19th Century. The ewers reference ancient Greek and Roman design and would have been crafted to imitate the ancient vessels that a tourist would have seen during their Grand Tour, visiting the sights of Italy and Greece. Both are in exceptionally good condition for their age and would be a beautiful addition to a curiosity cabinet or mantel.
