Description

A George III period sterling silver salt cellar with a gilt wash interior and hand-chased details by two members of the famed English silversmithing family, Peter & Ann Bateman. An engraving to the front shows a dog's head crest and to the interior of the cellar is the remnants of a gilt wash, which stops the silver from burning when holding salt. To the top rim of the cellar is some very fine chasing which has been executed beautifully. The hallmarks to the underside are clear and well-struck and indicate manufacture in London in 1797 by the brother and sister-in-law duo of Peter and Ann Bateman. To the underside there appears to be the remnant of an old repair, which in all honesty has been done perfectly and is not visible from the top. A really lovely example of a George III silver salt cellar by perhaps the most famous English silversmithing family.
