A rare George III period sterling silver sugar shaker with floral repousse decor by members of the famed English silversmithing family, The Batemans. The ornate sugar shaker has crisp marks to the lid, and rubbed marks to the base both for Peter & Jonathan Bateman, sons of the famous female silversmith, Hester Bateman. The rare element of this shaker is that it was manufactured in the six months that their partnership lasted, prior to Jonathan's premature death in 1791. To the front of the shaker is a blank shield, unusual for the period as during the Georgian period it was standard to have your initials or crest engraved on family silver. There is a crisp date mark for London 1790 which aligns with the partnership period of Peter & Jonathan Bateman. The lid to the shaker fits well and is secure. A rare piece of Georgian silver from a very desirable period of the Bateman dynasty.
