A well executed miniature of Marie Antionette from the late 19th century after an original portrait by Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (1755-1842). This French miniature has been painted on celluloid which has been patterned to imitate ivory. The original gilt bronze (ormolu) frame is in lovely condition and features a coronet to the top and fleur-de-lis medallions throughout. To the rear is a stand which has a small makers mark for the frame, however is unidentified. The portrait has been signed to the lower right hand corner, however is unfortunately illegible. The piece is in lovely condition with a rich patina to the ormolu frame, however the original cloth backing shows its age and has deteriorated. We have chosen not to replace the fabric, as it appears original to the piece, and does not detract from the otherwise pristine miniature. The original artwork from which this miniature is based is titled 'Marie Antoinette With a Rose' and was painted in 1783, ten years before her execution. This later example is a beautifully rendered miniature in such a lovely frame which can be displayed with its hinged stand or hung from the small bale to the rear of the coronet.
