This early 19th Century ladle was made in England and features the 'Ancient Tomb at Boglipore'. Crafted from glazed earthenware the ladle includes blue and white transfer prints on both the handle and also the bowl of the ladle, the bowl depicting a man powered boat sailing down a river with an Indian temple in the background. The back stamp which has the text 'Ancient Tomb at Boglipore' also has the surrounding text 'Ancient Scenes' implying that this is likely only one design in a series of transfer printed pieces. Whilst the maker is unattributed, it would appear that the image depicted in the bowl is taken from a larger original image by Lieutenant Colonel C. R. Forrest, which was published in 'A Picturesque Tour Along the River Ganges and Jumna in India' and was first printed in London in 1824. The piece was likely manufactured in the Regency period, likely shortly after the production of Forrest's book. With minor wear associated with age and use, this is a beautiful piece to gift to a blue and white collector, or a useful object in a country style kitchen.
