Ruskin Pottery Pink Glazed Vase with Blue Ivy Leaves

This pink glazed vase is slightly different to all our other Ruskin pottery in that it has been hand-painted to the rim. The piece which has a deep candy pink coloured glaze has a hand-painted blue ivy border near the top of the vase which has softened in colour during the firing process. The piece is marked to the underside with the impressed Ruskin Pottery mark and has a small painted mark in the form of a pair of scissors. The impressed mark is of the initials WHT, for William Howson Taylor, while the scissors is a mark which is a play on the 'Taylor' family surname. These particular marks were used at the very beginning of the 20th century when Ruskin Pottery was in its infancy. Manufactured near Birmingham, Ruskin Pottery is a perfect example of Arts & Crafts period design, with the pieces designed by Edward R. Taylor and his son William Howson Taylor. Remarkably after Ruskin was closed in the 1930s, William Howson Taylor destroyed his glaze records so that pieces could not be replicated. This particular vase is in very fine order with no apparent chips or cracks and only very minor wear to the glaze commensurate with age and use. A delightful piece to add to a collection of Ruskin, but also perfectly usable!
