A large, signed, oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman by the German artist Oskar Gross (b. 1871-1963). Gross was born in Vienna and worked mostly as a portraitist but in 1898, he won a mural competition for the Hungarian State Pavilion, which was being designed for the Paris Exposition of 1900. This work led to an invitation to decorate some of architect Daniel Burnham's buildings in Chicago, where Gross decided to settle in 1903 and continued his art career until he died in 1963.
