An unusual oil on canvas of cathedral ruins by artist G Digby. The picture features a crumbling building which the artist has represented in earthen tones. Whilst the name G Digby who dated the painting '1915' is a relatively unknown artist, the original carved gilded frame is signed by American framer 'Thulin'. Walfred Thulin was a talented picture framer working in Boston during the early 20th century and typically signed his work to the rear, with this piece having a crisp mark to reverse.

The subject of the picture appears to be Continental or English in origin, however little is known about the artist Digby and his origins. It is assumed the picture has been painted in Europe or England given the subject matter, and then framed in Boston by Walfred Thulin. The frame has subtle Art Nouveau elements whilst remaining quite strong and masculine in appearance. The picture is likely entirely untouched with the frame and canvas showing no signs of being re-stretched or repaired. It could benefit from a clean by an art conservator, but we have decided to leave it in its original state. A beautiful picture which would be a handsome addition to a prospering art collection.

Measures - 86cm W x 71cm H
