Vintage Tiffany Jewellery

A History of Vintage Tiffany Jewellery

The foundation of vintage Tiffany jewellery goes along with the beginnings of Tiffany & Co itself. In 1837, Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B Young opened a goods and fine jewellery store on Broadway in New York City. With only a $1000 loan from Charles’ father, the store quickly became a success as the location was ideal. Soon after, the company acquired international recognition for their implementation of the British Silver Standard, where using 97 percent pure metal was the main factor.

In 1878, Tiffany & Co acquired the 287.42ct rough yellow diamond from the Kimberley diamond mines in South Africa. This diamond was set in a necklace and worn by Audrey Hepburn for the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961, and it became known as the Tiffany Diamond.
