This vanity box was created around the Turn of The Century by American firm, Unger Brothers. The hinged box features a lid with heavy repousse detailing depicting a reclining female amongst flowers and bold Art Nouveau swirls. The box was likely originally designed to hold a large bar of soap however could be repurposed to hold hair accessories or even medications. The firm Unger Brothers were based in Newark, New Jersey and operated between 1872 and 1910, creating designs which were heavily influenced by the Art Nouveau period. To the centre front of the box is a very elaborate monogram, likely 'BHC'. The piece has normal signs of wear associated with age and use, such as slight bumps and abrasions, all commensurate with age and use. A really beautiful and practical piece of Art Nouveau sterling silver.
