In the jewellery and decorative arts world, the name Faberge excites unlike any other. This cigarette case crafted from silver and a turquoise cabochon dates to the early 20th century prior to the Russian revolution and was made by Faberge. The texture of the case is what is known as 'Samorodok', referencing the technique used to create the rippled, fabric like surface. The interior of the case is finished with a gilt wash which protects it from tarnish and is common in pieces from this period. The push button closure of the case is crafted from a piece of cabochon turquoise which has ben rub-over set with ring of gilt silver. Both sides of the case have been stamped with the relevant Zolotnik marks from Moscow where the piece was manufactured along with two K.Faberge stamps which present under the double headed eagle 'imperial warrant'. The marks on this particular case indicate its manufacture to between 1908 and 1917, the end of Imperial Russia. The case is in wonderful condition with the only notable issue being slight flea bites to the cabochon turquoise, commensurate with age and use. An absolutely delightful piece of pre revolution Russian silver by the greatest maker of all, which in a 21st century context could be used to hold bank and ID cards when going out to dinner.
